LCSW Licensure/Exam Requirements

• Must be of good moral character
• Must be at least 21 years of age
• Must have an education that includes a master’s degree in social work (MSW) with at least 12 semester hours of clinical coursework that is accepted by the Department
• Must have at least 3 years of post MSW supervised experience in diagnosis, psychotherapy, and assessment-based treatment planning that is accepted by the Department
• Must meet clinical examination requirements
• Must complete coursework and/or training in the identification and reporting of child abuse that is offered by a NYS approved provider

Applying to become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)

Submit Form 1 (Application for Licensure) and a fee of $294.00.

Request your university to verify your education directly to the NYS education Department on Form 2.

Request your supervisor to submit verification of your supervised hours in diagnosis and psychotherapy on Form 4B. Applicants must hast supervised experience approved in order to meet licensing eligibility.

NYS Department of Education must approve your education, supervised experience and all application materials. Applicants will be notified along with ASWB when all requirements are satisfied.

Register directly with the ASWB to take the Clinical examination.
