New York State LCSW Requirements

To become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in NYS, you must:

  • Be at least 21 years of age
  • Be of good moral character
  • Hold an MSW degree that includes at least 12 semester hours of clinical coursework accepted by the Department
  • Complete 3 years of post-MSW supervised experience in diagnosis, psychotherapy, and assessment-based treatment planning
  • Pass the ASWB Clinical Examination
  • Complete NYS-approved training in the identification and reporting of child abuse

How to Apply

1. Submit Application (Form 1)


2. Verify Education (Form 2)

  • Request your university to send Form 2 directly to the NYS Education Department

3. Verify Supervised Experience (Form 4B)

  • Have your supervisor complete and submit Form 4B
  • Supervised experience must be approved to qualify for licensure

4. Await Approval

  • NYS Education Department will review all materials
  • Once approved, both you and the ASWB will be notified

5. Register for the Exam
