Workshop Description

Free CE for NASW-NY Members in honor of World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10.

This training is designed for providers seeking to deepen their competency in assessing and treating suicidal ideation and self-injurious behaviors in youth and adults. Participants will receive an overview of evidence-based approaches drawn from CBT and DBT, with practical guidance on how to integrate these techniques into their therapeutic work.

The training emphasizes clinical decision-making frameworks that help providers evaluate risk, understand the functions of self-harm, and respond skillfully to both acute and chronic presentations. Participants will also learn strategies for developing collaborative safety plans, implementing coping and replacement skills, and reducing shame and avoidance through distress-tolerance and emotion-regulation techniques.

Guidance for engaging caregivers will be woven throughout, including how to navigate caregiver anxiety, set expectations for monitoring, and reinforce skill use between sessions. By the end of the training, clinicians will be equipped with concrete tools and session-ready language that enhance safety, increase emotional regulation, and support hope and resilience for clients experiencing suicidal ideation or self-injurious behaviors.

Learning Objectives

Following this course, participants will be able to:

  • Evaluate a client's risk status and determine when referral to a higher level of care is warranted.
  • Describe deliberation data and discuss the role of means restriction in client safety.
  • Create a developmentally-appropriate safety plan in collaboration with clients and caregivers.
  • Explain replacement techniques and coping skills that reduce self-harm urges and increase emotion regulation.
  • Identify strategies for engaging caregivers in safety planning and ongoing monitoring between sessions.
